Salkantay treks & Short Inca trail

Salkantay Inca Trail Trek involves 3 days hike on the famous Salkantay trek and 2 days along the short Inca Trail to Machupicchu. This hike is the best alternative hikes to the Salkantay to Inca Trail. Not along the typical tourist trail path, this is an innovating adventure for travelers who want a little more solitude and individuality on their journey. With impressive views, the Salkantay Mountain to Wiñaywayna, Sun Gate, Machu Picchu gives you the privacy for peaceful reflection that such a sacred path deserves.

This is one of the most interesting and enjoyable Inca Trail alternatives due to the wide range of plant diversity, various ecosystems, remote Andean villages, and views of the snow-capped of Salkantay as well as of the Llactapata Incan site on the peak of a mountain, just behind the Machu Picchu Mountain, Start the short Inca Trail and explore the Chachabamba, Wiñaywayna ruins and view the Machu Picchu by Intipunku (Sun Gate). This trail finally reaches Aguas Calientes, located at the foothill of the historical and archaeological site of Machu Picchu, from where we hike in early morning up to lost city of the Incas to see the sunrise above it. Then our English speaking tour guide takes us around this incredible Incan citadel.

DAY 1: CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – SORAYPAMPA  (L) (D).

We leave Cusco early in our private transportation towards the town of Mollepata, during the journey will pass through some villages like  Izcuchaca  and  Limatambo.  We are going to drive for 3 hours approx. 

Once we get to the town of Mollepata we will have our breakfast after that we will continue driving to the starting point of our hike Challacancha, here we are going to organize our day pack then we are going to start our hike to Soraypampa our first campsite, which is at 3850 meters above sea level, is reached by lunchtime, after our lunch we will hike up to the beautiful Humantay Lake  from Soraypampa for 2 hours all the way up to the lake, then we will enjoy the view of the lake and the glacier of humantay (5217msnm) later we will take the same way down where was our lunch. Hikers return in time for afternoon tea, which consists of coffee, hot chocolate, tea, and mate de coca, after that we will have a  free time to rest until dinner.

DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA – CHAULLAY – COLLPAPAMPA (B) (L) (D).

After the breakfast we are going to start our hike, this second day is the hardest day but full of adventures that will cross the highest point of Salkantay  (4600 msnm) means: the wild mountain, the imposing snowy where we can appreciate the majesty of the area and take some pictures. During the journey we will find several piles of stones called Apachetas. From our campsite to the highest pass takes 4 hours approx. and the trail is going in Zigzag to the top with a beautiful views.

Once we get to the top we will have beautiful views and we will see the glacier of Salkantay very close to us finally following the trail now we are going to descend to the valley for about 3 hours after that we will have our lunch then we will continue walking for about 4 hours approx. down to Chaullay then Collpapampa for one hour more where is our second camp. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 03: COLLPAPAMPA – LA PLAYA – HIDROELECTRICA – AGUAS CALIENTES

In the morning we will begin our hike to La Playa and contemplate the magnificent jungle landscape surrounding us. Along the way you will see the flora and fauna of this place you will see like wild orchids, cornfields, grasses and flowers, and fields of fruit, as well as an incredible waterfall. 5 hours of hiking brings the trip to La Playa, once at La Playa, we will enjoy our last delicious lunch and watch a coffee demostration before heading into our transportation to Hidroelectrica.

After our driving to Hidroelectrica we are going to start our hike to Aguas Calientes for 3 hours along the rail way through lush vegetation above the Urubamba river or boar the train to Aguas Calientes (not included in the program). Once in Aguas Calientes we will take you to your hotel before exploring the small town and having our dinner at a good restaurant.

DAY 04: AGUAS CALIENTES – KM 104 – WIÑAYHUAYNA – SUN GATE – MACHUPICCHU

Another early morning start along the rail way  to Km 104 for 3 hours approx. to the Inca Trail checkpoint. where we will start our amazing trek on the Inca Trail! Our adventure begins with an uphill hike for about 4 hours until we arrive to the archeological site of Wiña Wayna (Always Young). We will enjoy our  box lunch  here in the middle of the mountains and will have free time to rest and enjoy the beautiful view.
Next, we will continue our hike, moving toward a site called Inti Punku (the Sun Gate). From this place, we will be able to look down and admire the great beauty of the Inca citadel Machu Picchu! Here, the Inca Trail officially ends.
We will finish our first day’s adventure following the lateral trail in direction to the exit of Machu Picchu where you will decide to keep walking down to Aguas Calientes town or we will take a bus down to Aguas Calientes, We will have dinner in a restaurant and then rest comfortably hostel.

DAY 05: MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO

A 2 hour hike up to the city of Machu Picchu in the early morning, after breakfast, brings the group to the city early enough to get sunrise pictures of the city and to miss most of the crowds. There is a guided tour of the Incan city, explaining the rich history of the site, after which hikers have the option of hiking to the peak of either Huayna Picchu mountain or Machu Picchu mountain, (not included in the program) with incredible views of the city from above, another good photo opportunity. Finally, there is time for individual exploration of the city of Machu Picchu.

At the end of the day, there is a train ride from Aguas Calientes to either Ollantaytambo or Poroy, from where a bus will continue the rest of the way to Cusco. After that we will drive you back to your hotel.

Our guide will visit your hotel a day before the trek for your briefing. Our guide will provided the duffel bag for your personal belonging (6 kilos),

The Peru Treks chefs cook delicious meals that many previous trekkers have raved about. If you are a vegetarian or have any restrictions, our chef will prepare special food, please advise us in advance. A vegetarian meal option is for NO extra cost. Food is typically served and buffet.

Water

Excluding the first 4 hours of the trek when you need to bring your own, Peru Treks will supply all the water needed. This water will be boiled, filtered and then cooled, before distributing. You must supply your own water bottles or camel back. We recommend carrying about 3L worth. We will refill our waters at each meal.

Muleteer + Horses

Our horses will carry the all camping equipement for your trek and 6 kg for your personal beloging + Sleeping bag;

Tourist Train

From Machu Picchu to Ollantaytambo,  Perurail company or Incarail company

  • If you take the train return at 13:37, you will be in Cusco at 17:30
  • If you take the trail return at 14:30, you will be in Cusco at 18:30
  • If you take the train return at 15:00, you will be in Cusco at 20:00

Note: on the high season, it is very important let us know in advance, because it is very difficult find spaces available.

Machu Picchu Bus

Bus ticket from Aguas Calientes Town to Machupicchu are included on the last day round trip

Private Transportation

Early morning transfer by private bus to Challacancha – the initial point of the trek;

On the last day you will take a train and bus back to Cusco city after that our driver is going to wait for you at the bus station and you will  drive back to your hotel (Door to Door service)

First aid kit including emergency oxygen bottle

Our guide has received training in first aid from a physician. Your tour guide will always have a first-aid kit for basic medical problems (traveler’s diarrhea, cuts, scrapes, etc.) and oxygen.

WHAT TO PUT IN YOUR BACKPACK FOR SALKANTAY TREK  AND THE SHORT INCA TRAIL 5 DAYS

As a Direct Local Tour operator, we provide you with a duffel bag at your briefing and  INCLUDE a extra weight for the horse to 5 kgs or 11lbs including your 2.5kg sleeping bag, mattress and extra clothing. By Peruvian law, a duffel bag must not weigh more than 5 kilograms (11lbs). This limit is set to protect the health of the  horses. All bags will be weighed before being accepted. If you require more than 5 kilograms, it will then be your responsibility to carry the extra weight with your day pack. In this 5 kilos, please count 2 kilos for your sleeping bag and 1 kilo for your sleeping pad. This leaves you about 2 kilos for your personal gear.

The Classic Salkantay plus the short Inca Trail 5d/4n to Machupicchu can leave any day of the week but not during the February month because of the wet season and the Inca trail is close.
