Right next to the Madre de Dios River, is where lies an astounding biodiversity oasis, the beautiful Sandoval lake. It is situated inside the Tambopata National Reserve and holds an impressive amount of different species. You will be able to see monkeys, exotic tropical birds, caimans, various Amazonian mammals, and much more, just in one tour.

Our 3-Day Sandoval Lake Tour is the perfect mix between adventurous exploring and encountering the Amazonian wildlife, mixed with the luxurious and relaxing facilities of our Lodge. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable experience!.

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Lodge – Monkey Island – Lodge

We are going to Pick you up from the airport or bus station and transfer to the Lodge office for relevant tour information. Transfer to the port where we will take a boat for one hour to our lodge. Welcome meeting with a refreshing fruit juice from our region. Check-in to your respective rooms. After lunch, we will visit the «Monkey Island», located in front of our lodge across the Madre de Dios River. In this place, there are different species of monkeys, such as the brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, titi monkey, and white-headed capuchin. After the activity, we will return to the lodge. At night, we will go looking for caimans, usually on the banks of the Madre de Dios River, this time you will need to bring a flashlight. Hopefully, we can see the capybara, the largest rodent in the world, which can weigh up to 60 kilos, an impressive relative of the Peruvian guinea pig; return to the lodge, dinner, and overnight at the lodge.

Day 2: Sandoval Lake and little tours

After an early breakfast, we will take a short boat ride to the entrance of Lake Sandoval. After checking in at the control point, we will walk 3 kilometers (approximately 2 miles) to Lake Sandoval (a piranha habitat), one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. After the pleasant walk, the guide will take us on a rowboat where we will navigate the lake to observe different species of birds and monkeys (Hoatzin cormorant, Jacanas, heron, puma, eagles, howler monkey, squirrel monkey, black capuchin, titis, and sloths). We may encounter a family of giant river otters (nearly two meters long) that are endangered, and the largest recorded caiman, over 4 meters long. We will return to the lodge to enjoy a typical lunch.

In the afternoon,  we will enjoy the Canopy Walkway will allow us to see the tropical jungle from a different perspective, about 30 meters high. The bridges will let us appreciate nature from a great height, and we will have a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River. From the platforms, different species of birds such as toucans and macaws can be observed.   

Then we will take a night walk where we can appreciate the diversity of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. – Dinner and rest.

Day 3: Lodge – Parrot Clay Lick (Cachuela) – Puerto Maldonado

We wake up very early to have a coffee or hot tea before leaving to see the Parrot Clay Lick. This is the favorite place of the parrots, a naturally occurring clay wall where you can observe between 3 to 5 species of parrots, which come to feed from this special clay. This is a special treat for the metabolism of the birds and a truly wonderful and exciting colorful spectacle.

Afterward, we will have a tasty Breakfast. Then you will have some free time during which you can visit the local market or take a rest. After that we will board our boats and leave to the city of Puerto Maldonado and transfer to the airport or bus station.

  • Thin clothing for warm climates but necessarily long trousers and long sleeve shirts for the excursions
  •  At the Lodge, you can wear short sleeve shirts, shorts and sandals.
  •  Jacket because temperatures may drop in the evenings.
  •  Swimwear to enjoy the beautiful swimming pool.
  •  We provide rubber boots (we do not have size 44 and up).
  •  Rain ponchos. If you forget to bring them to the Lodge, you can buy them in our boutique.
  •  Mosquito repellent.
  •  Sun block.
  •  Sunglasses.
  •  Cap or hat.
  •  Binoculars, if desired.
  •  Small torch.
  •  Small backpack for hiking.
  •  Water bottle.
  •  Traveler’s first aid kit.
  •  The Lodge has a policy of not supplying medicines.
  •  Cash (soles, dollars or euros) for bar, massage and boutique services. You can pay with VISA or Master Card at the office. We recommend that you use small notes and coins to facilitate the payment of extra services at the Lodge.
